In 2019, the International Bioacoustics Council proudly returned to the United Kingdom to celebrate half a century of bioacoustics. The very first meeting was held in the UK shortly after our founding in 1969, making this 50th-anniversary congress a truly historic milestone for our global community.
The 2019 congress embraced the multidisciplinary nature of bioacoustics—the marriage of biology and physical acoustics. In keeping with our founding traditions, the Brighton symposium brought together biologists, ethologists, physiologists, engineers, sound archivists, and recordists in a friendly and informal setting.
Presentations covered a vast range of topics, including the anatomical and neuropsychological processes in vocal production, sound propagation in varying environments, and the evolutionary origins of acoustic communication across a wide range of animals and humans.
We were delighted to recognise outstanding contributions from our delegates during the 2019 symposium.
The 2019 congress was held in close coordination with VIHAR-2019 (The 2nd International Workshop on Vocal Interactivity in-and-between Humans, Animals, and Robots), which took place in London immediately prior to our Brighton meeting, further expanding the scope of acoustic research shared that week.
